I agree with most of what you are saying, Eric. But there is one major flaw in that line of thought.
If you like working/playing on the apple II, then mostly you would want to be a part of the apple II community and its discussions.
If you no longer like working on the apple or being a part of the community, but you take someones money, you are obligated to respond and inform of any delays.
It may take all the time you say it does to create books and so forth, but it only takes 30 seconds to send an email or create a topic for discussion to inform of any delays.
By not responding, you are saying you no longer want to be a part of the community or talk to anyone in the community. In which case, you should at least give respect to the people who are trying to keep the community alive and come forth to offer Syndicomm to someone who has that passion.
It only takes one word to solve all these issues.

Then watch a community come together.
