Hey! Sure thing. Sorry if that last reply sounded bitchy, I should have my coffee before jumping on usenet. ;-)
Look at the board to find where the volume knob is soldered to the board. Use a ohm meter to measure the resistance across it and make sure the value goes up/down when you rotate the knob. If you get nothing, then it has most likely failed. If you get spikes when rotating the knob but it is not stable then it could just be really dirty. Mine is very scratchy. At any rate if you can trace the problem to the pot then contact cleaner might do the trick without having to replace the pot.
If you are able to confirm the pot is working then the next bet is to test and if necessary replace the speaker. One way to do this is plug in headphones and see if you get anything on those while rotating the volume knob. Another thing you could do is remove the speaker and use jumper wires to hook it up to the leads of another audio source to see if you get anything.
