While getting a copy of the (IIGS) System 6.0.1 install disk into a form
usable by Best of FTA on my iPad, I needed something to unpack the
self-extracting disk images Apple makes available. The easiest method at
the time was to grab a copy of Mini vMac:
http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/
It's a Mac Plus emulator that runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS 8 and up
(8.x on 68K, 9.x and X on PowerPC, and X on x86). Grab (Mac) System 6.0.8
from Apple's website, google for Mac Plus ROMs (they're easy to find), and
put the files where they need to go. Running on the kinda old Athlon 64
(3700+) under my desk at work, Finder comes up in less than two seconds when
running at the default 8x speed. Available speeds run from 1x (what you'd
want for games, presumably) to as fast as your hardware can run it.
