If you want to be able to read MFM-encoded disks (the standard PC disks), you would need the special drives.  However, if you have the disk images, you can put them as regular files on a ProDOS disk and configure the Transporter to "virtualize" the disks from those files.  If your IIgs has a mass storage device, you can even put a larger hard disk image that the Transporter can treat like a standard PC-XT hard disk.
