Experiments that you can try in the car:

1.) Without moving your head, look between the instruments on your dashboard
(speedometer, etc) and the road, as fast as you can. In other words, look up
and down by moving just your eyes.

2.) Now, again without moving your head, look from the far left of your
field of vision (road, presumably) to the far right as fast as you can.

In both experiments, you were relying on your eye muscles to look back and
forth. Which action was faster and didn't tire out your eye muscles as much?

Now think about why TV and movie screens are designed to be wider than they
are tall.


Actually, you can probably do this outside of a car. It's just that I made
this discovery whilst driving, so this is the scenario that comes to mind.
