It doesn't appear to be detrimental, however it does become a pain to
have to change all the settings each time you turn the machine on,
especially if you have lots of cards in your machine. With the ROM 3
boards just get a new battery and pop it in. With the ROM 1 you can
leave some small length of the leads after clipping the battery off
and then connect a new battery in its place. (three AA batteries in
series in a holder with alligator clips works pretty well as a
replacement).
