Re: AOL? Do What?!
Actually, Q-link was still active after Quantum became AOL - I used to work
there and remember the "sunset" (shutdown) of Q-link in the fall of 94. One
of my friends went to the company Halloween party as a q-link "prophet of
doom" - he wore a q-link t-shirt and carried a sign that said "Reboot! The
End is Near!".
It was a bummer to see it go, but it was costing more to keep the service up
than it was making in revenue. I think pc-link (geos on dos) and apple-link
(apple II) were sunsetted around the same time for the same reasons. There
were lots of "if qlink do A, elseif applelink or pclink do B, else do C"
work arounds in the server code base that was costing money to keep
functioning (we were constantly rewriting the server code to keep up with
growth).
Little known fact (heard from people who were there at the time): Quantum
Computer was named after Steve Case's car - a Volkswagon Quantum. They
needed to come up with a name to incorporate the company with, and it was
the best idea anyone had.
