I think the finish is more due to a dye being put into the plastic resin
before it was put into the molds, rather than a final finish being
painted/bonded to the case. If you've ever seen a case that is chipped, you
will notice it is the same color throughout. While you may be able to
duplicate the color with paint, you would probably get an unnatural sheen, a
tacky texture, or maybe even paint rubbing off on your fingers.
The yellowing can't be undone, but I have had good success in cleaning up a
grubby unit by taking a small quantity of mineral spirits or similar
solvents (like "Goof Off", etc) and giving the case a good scrub. That gets
a lot of dirt and grime off. Also, for those "surplus" items with permanent
ink on the case or tack left over from stickers, that stuff will all wipe
off with a little elbow grease.
Prevention is another asset-- My computer stuff is in a pretty dark room,
but I have even gone to the extent to keep a small towel or blanket draped
over the units to keep the UV off.
Still, a color change might be an interesting alternative. I bet you could
get the plastic parts powder coated and it would turn out ok and be a lot
more durable than paint. A lot of patio furniture is powder coated
nowadays-- more durable and waterproof than paint. Look at some of those
pieces for comparison-- you could probably get that sort of finish on a II
case and it would look "different".
