I believe that neither the hardware nor the newer Mac OS's (8.0 and up)
support 800K disks.

That's guarenteed to work. I suggest a Classic II or SE/30. They are
common, cheap, and very compact. If you are willing to spend more, a Color
Classic is very nice, and a highly desirable collectable in its own right.
The Color Classic also supports the IIe card. I have a couple of them, one
upgraded to an 040. They are a lot of fun in a very compact package.
