Re: Marinetti over LocalTalk/Appletalk?

A follow-up on this thread:
This is a quote from a wee epistle I did on networking that can be found at:
http://www.syndicomm.com/~pilgrimer/nfh/nfhmaster.htm
-----------
Slight side road

I just KNOW some bright person is going to ask me about TCP over those
Localtalk wires. After all, they are there. Why not do TCP/IP over them and
thereby get DIREcTLY from the Apple IIGS (at least) to the Internet?

Or, at least get from a Mac on localtalk only out to the internet. (the
Localtalk component of Marinetti is still VERY pre-beta and has been
demonstrated only once at a Kfest)

Well. I have heard it can be done, but I never got it to work. One thing:
Localtalk Bridge eats TCP packets. What that means is: If you run Localtalk
Bridge so that you can see a Ethernet connected Mac in the Appletalk control
Panel of your Apple II, you can NOT also do TCP/IP over that same line.

Drat! Back to the Wallet.

To solve this dilemma requires your Apple II to have 2 network connections: 1
Localtalk so you can pass files, and 1 TCP/IP so you can surf the Web. Yes,
surf the web.

That second connection is achieved using Joachim Langes LANceGS card. The
TCP/IP capable ethernet card for the Apple II. The Lance (as its users dubbed
it) has its own requirements and set-up and I will leave it to the tech
support folks at A2Central to get you up to speed on it.

Back to the main highway...
