Very early Macs would generally fill the screen with garbage and make
odd noises.  The "bomb" icon was popular for quite a long time.  If you
have MacsBug installed, you get white instead of the bomb.  Sometimes the
system will completely freeze up or display odd effects rather than
crash with any color screen.

Under OS X, a full-out Kernel Panic is indicated by white text on a
black background being printed over whatever was already on the screen.
