Newsgroup is generally a *VERY*BAD* place to seek legal advise of any kind.
With that being said...
Typically companies copyright the artwork of the circuit boards. How the
hardware actually works may or may not be covered by patent(s); although in
this day and age anything remotely unique are probably patented. (Remember
Zipchip vs. Rocketchip) Any firmware/BIOS necessary for the hardware to
function are most definitely copyrighted.
Now whether or not the company in question still exists or if the company
will pursue any perceived infraction is another matter entirely.
