There is an 8 bit utility called GZ2PKZIP (or something like that)
that will convert a GZ file into a ZIP file so that you can use
standard ZIP unarchiving programs on your Apple II to unpack them.

Resource forks won't be a problem for IIgs utilities to deal with but
8 bit utilities like the GZ2PKZIP I mentioned above and DSK2FILE will
choke on them.
