This is because the Laser 128 uses the same hardware as the Universal
Disk Controller card. It is more flexible in the types of drives it
will support.
A genuine Apple 3.5 Drive (with eject button) has a pin on the connector
which is used by the host machine to identify its presence. This signal
doesn't exist on a Mac external 800K drive, so one of these drives is
not detected by a standard 3.5" disk controller on the Apple II.
The Laser and UDC must use a different technique to detect the drive.
