As a matter of fact, on the x86 you can also add immediate values both
to the accumulator and the index registers, as well as to most other
CPU registers.  Starting with the 386, the x86 improved considerably
on orthogonality.

Wasn't the reason IBM PC went Intel the availability of the 8088,
while the 68008 wasn't yet available?  IBM considered the 8-bit
external data bus attractive, since ot made constructing the
motherboard simpler and cheaper.
