Re: Boot IIgs from AS server

Hey there....misery loves company: I finally got around to installing
AppleShare 3.0 on my Quadra 700 -- that's a 68040 under the hood, right? --
under System 7.6. I am able to boot from this server with my ROM 03, but like
you, if I try with my ROM 01, I get that same "blue screen of death" <heh> that
prompts me to insert HD1 (the server's hard disk). If I boot the ROM 01 with
the network boot disk I created (and provide a companion disk with the Finder on
it, as a small launcher program is placed on MY Installer-created boot disk,
almost obviously for space reasons), I am able to attach to either of the two
Macs on my network.

In the course of my searching Apple's web site, I came up with this doozy,
though:

TOPIC

I have an Apple IIGS, and it does not boot properly from an AppleShare server.
How can I boot the Apple IIGS from the server?

DISCUSSION

This problem only happens with Apple IIGS computers that have ROM 01. There are
two solutions:

1) Upgrade to ROM 03. It doesn't have a problem booting from an AppleShare
server.

2) Create an AppleShare boot disk and start the Apple IIGS from that disk.

This allows you to use the Auto Logon feature to set the boot disk to
automatically log into the server and launch a program at startup.

I haven't really scrutinized things yet, so I've missed this "Auto Logon
feature" that lets me automatically log into the server and run a program at
startup.

While I'm on it, one of the pertinent articles on Apple's web site refers to a
manual, "AppleTalk Network User's Guide for the Apple IIGS." Does anybody have
this, and if so, does it provide any information beyond what we already know
here? I've been trying to locate this manual for awhile, but if it contains
nothing new, I'll save myself some hassle.

Also, I have many of my old Apple II disks behind me. If I can find System
5.0.4, I'll give a holler.
