Top and bottom posting refer to the position of the quoted message like this
has the the new text at the top, but you can mix it and answer in between or
quote all at the top and then put your answer.

Cross posting is a pain as all folowups go to all groups, and that is often
a waste if the subject matter  is specific in the individual groups after a
few followups. also, the more groups you crosspost in, the more the spam
bots find not only new groups to post to, but new email addresses to send to
as well.
