Re: Proposed group addition

dilute the thin traffic here already.

Nobody ever said the traffic here justified the new group. The idea is to provide the people making Lisa and Apple/// posts (possibly Legacy Macs as well) a more appropriate area than this one for asking questions. I don't follow the Mac groups so I wouldn't know how many Lisa or Apple// (come to think of it Apple// as well) questions are asked there. Are the Mac groups any more appropriate than this one because of their traffic?

This new group would get LOTS of Apple II-related posts, and people would
continue to post Lisa and Mac questions to this apple2 group. I just don't
get the point.

The point is one of focus and education. There are three reasons why people post non-Apple// questions here. 1) They are newbies and don't know what kind of computer they have. These we can educate. 2) All they see is the "Apple" part of the name. Again, these we can educate unless they are Mac people trying to get more newsgroup space (If it says Apple it must *really* mean Mac). This has not happened in quite a while. 3) The people here have more specific knowledge than people in other groups. These are the people we are trying to help. By splitting off the people in this category we maintain the focus of this group plus provide the people in the other group with an appropriate area to discuss their needs.

The people in this group and the other groups may overlap somewhat. Then again, so do the people who are here who own PCs. By this logic, posts about PC only topics would be fine. Taken to an extreme, would posts about auto mechanics be OK because a few people here have cars? The people in the new group would say "Apple// only topics should be posted in comp.sys.apple2." Much as we the same way we send Mac questions to Mac groups. If we didn't point the Mac people in the right direction, what do you think would happen to csa2?

While you're at it, maybe you need to start a "copyright-infringement"
newsgroup, too. Those threads are much more of an off-topic burden here than
the occasional Lisa or Apple /// message!

Off topic is off topic. At least the copyright-infringement can be tied back to the topic of the group because it relates to Apple// software. To follow through with what I consider a useful quote from the modern media... "Focus Pinkey! Focus!"
