Yeah, this chicken/egg thing is a real obstacle. What we need is a starter
kit of disk images, so that someone with access to a Mac can create a 3.5"
disk with the essential utilities as easily as the System disks can be
created. Dealing with the file forking and file type changing can drive you
nuts.
I haven't played with ADT, but the same could be done for people who don't
have 3.5" drives for the Apple II, or don't have access to a Mac. We could
create disk images of the essential utilities (Shrinkit, Unforkit, a file
type changer, etc.) and make a cookbook procedure to follow for
transferring the image to their Apple II and creating a disk.
This would allow people who pick up an Apple II at a garage sale to get
started right away. The faq should have a prominent link on the main page
for newbies with step-by-step instructions for creating bootable util disks,
and other must-have software like an editor and some classic games. The
easier it is for people to get their Apple II's going, the more we can
preserve.
