Re: low level format on a lisa?

Nice point! I believe maybe a new group that supports legacy Apples of all
types might be just the ticket. The key is really to get people to start
posting there. Also, I haven't a clue how to start a group or whats involved.

Here is a bit of advice (A friend did some research a while back). First off, be clear as to what you want to do. In this case the reason for the newsgroup would be to provide a group of people, who have older Apple products, with a general forum they do not currently have in the newsgroups. Phrase the charter of the group in terms of people and not newsgroups, machines, or programs. Phrase it in a positive light. It will encourage people with these unsupported devices to become more self sufficient in finding solutions for problems.

The group should not be under the alt hierarchy since it deals with computer type systems. It should be a comp group. The advantage of the comp hierarchy is it is carried on more machines. The alt hierarchy is mainly for lifestyle choices. Recently it has become a dumping ground for every concievable topic.

Then is the choice of a moderated or unmoderated group. A moderated group has quete a few advantages. Namely no spam or off topic posts. The down side is all posts have to be viewed and approved by a single moderator. Nobody wants to take on that job by choice. An unmoderated group also has a lot of advantages. Namely there is no censorship and anybody can post anything they like. The down side is newsgroup spam and off topic posts. About 15 years ago this was a smaller problem than it is today because people could get a spammer banned from their ISP or get their ISP cut off if they refused to deal with a spammer on their machine. Today people resort to the courts to deal with e-mail spam. I'd suggest an unmoderated group.

There is a call for discussion. It could take place informally before the formal request. It then takes place for a certain period (either two or four weeks). Then a call for votes where EVERYBODY can vote on the creation of the new group. All this is preceeded by a petition (It used to be of 100 people, but I don't know what the new number is). At that point the group is created and distributed world wide.

If the group is too small for this, there is an alternate solution. Convince a company to donate a machine, internet connection, and an IP (a domain name wouldn't hurt either). From there the group can set up an open news server which has a limited number of news groups (perhaps as few as one). When people want to check out the group they would point their news reader to the open server and subscribe to the newsgroup found on that machine. Depending on the software, it might be possible to have someone come in once per year and make sure things are working. OTOH some popular software requires a full time MCSE to restart the machine every couple of hours.

Check out the magazine archives at the site in my .signature file (top link at the bottom). There are two articles in the first few months about how to create an alt group. The process should be similar for a comp group.

I believe that I am not alone in collecting and using older apples of several
types, yet support and groups are limited to macs and apple II's. I don't have
a newton, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who have these which should
also
receive a group. As long as there is traffic, there should be some form of
group.
Once the group gets too large on one subject (apple II games, etc), it should
branch
off into its own group.

In the case of the suggested group, questions regarding machines with other groups (eg. this one or the Mac groups) could be forwarded, cross posted, or sent there. The same would be done with the other groups and the proposed group.

Macs have their own group, this is why we can send mac questions to another
group.
We all agree on this, but until there is a designated group for the misfit
apples
I believe the questions should come here.

Considering this was the original Apple group, and the Mac groups were created for the 68000 based machines, a more logical division would be anything 6502 (or related) should be handled here. Where as anything based on the 68000, PowerPC, or related chips should be handled there. Grouping similar or related hardware together seems logical to me.

To sum it all up, maybe we should start a new thred asking peoples opinion on whether or not they mind getting questions reguarding Lisa's. Yes people (like
myself), will still ask and others will
help out, but I'm curious as to how many people have lisa's and use this group.

I agree. We should ask the opinions of all the people here first. Since it is group business it would be an on topic post. Who should make the request? You, Paul, me, or someone else...

No Lisas. A bunch of GSs, and a couple of 68K Macs.
