Or, one might say, the pre-efficient market days, when the odds were
that you were the only one around who had the faintest idea what a
"goody" was and what it was worth (to you).

With eBay, the community is sufficiently enlarged that there's often
someone else who either knows what it is and wants it more than you
do or, frequently, doesn't know what it is, but wants it anyway!  ;-)

There are still plenty of smaller markets--as the topic of this thread
attests--but since they are smaller, they tend to require a lot more
investment of personal time per "find" than does eBay.  One way or
another, you "pay" for what you get in the long term.  Of course, in
the short term, you occasionally hit the jackpot and are golden!
