Hi,
My name is David Noack and I'm a technology correspondent with
Investor's Business Daily, a national business newspaper.
I'm doing a story about where computer users who have vintage or older
systems can go to get spare parts, whether they cannibalize other
computers for spare parts, go to yard sales, thrift stories or online
auction sites to find the part they're looking for.
I would like to hear from people who have sought out and know places
to get parts for older and vintage computers, what were you looking
for, how did you find out where to get that part, how difficult its
becoming to find parts, etc.
Below are some questions for your consideration. Feel free to add
comments that go beyond the questions I ask, if you have some story or
anecdote about trying to get an old computer part.
1. What kind of old or vintage computers do you have? How long have
you had them?. Do you collect old and vintage computers as a hobby?
How many do you have?
2. What part or parts went bad or you needed to replace on your old
and vintage computer? Did you try any traditional methods of looking
for those parts at maybe a local computer store or did you already
know from experience that trying to get that part would take more time
and effort?
Do you find parts in online auction sites or maybe at a garage sale?
3. Are there stores that specialize in vintage computer parts for an
Atari, TRS-80, Adam, Commodore, Amiga Apple II, etc. Do these stories
carry vintage computer part for a number of different older systems?
4. What are some of the advantages/disadvantages in having an older
computer that you don't experience with a newer system in terms of
getting parts? For example, are parts for these older system more
expensive than today's parts? Are the parts easily interchangeable or
swappable on the motherboard or elsewhere as today's parts are so
modular.
5. What care do you have to give to vintage computers? Can you
use these computers a lot, on a daily basis, or just once in a while?
Are vintage computers more for show than for actual day-to-day use.
Are they collectors items, something to be admired but not used
anymore?
6. Where did you get your vintage computers? Online, yard sales,
thrift stores? Are they difficult to find?
7. What do you like most about vintage computers? The technology at
that time? They work better than today's computers, or they are a
piece of computer history to remind us of where we are today.
Again, please feel free to add anything that I failed to ask about.
Also, please include a little info about yourself, name, where you
live (state/city) will do, how long working with or been involved in
computing and maybe a generic job description.
