Even much Apple DOS software which ran on an 80-column card would
read the keyboard by directly accessing the keyboard hardware addresses.

Yes I could, but that would have an effect only on Applesoft programs.
Due to the software culture in the Apple II world, there just isn't
a way to do this keyboard shift modification so it'll work on virtually
all Apple DOS/ProDOS programs.
