I take it the pict files that you mentioned are some sort of graphics
format.

You run these pict files through your OCR software and then load these
in a word processor.  What happens to the graphics that are a part of
the image?  Do you add them back in some way or does the OCR software
just bypass them?

Are you using some Adobe software to generate the PDF file or is it
something else, commercial or free?

I have some Apple manuals that I would like to do something with but
not sure I want to invest the time you have for this.  The jpegs get
to be quite large for storage.
