--> I've been `burnt' by those pustulent scabs that feed off of the
mis-gotten laws of this country - but only once. Ever since I had
a 25 (US) dollar poster arrive seeking 40 (CAN) brokerage fees a
few years back; I've made sure I've never been faced with that
again. These scum... er, brokerage firms, get money given to them
    for doing absolutely NOTHING at all.  They weren't hired by me;
they weren't hired by the Post Office; they weren't hired by the
US firm sending me what I ordered - but they get to sit there and
get money handed over to them. I've no problem paying for a service
I've asked for - but _NOT_ these bastards. They don't deserve a
single cent, for what amounts to highway robbery.

Any company I do cross-border business with (US/CAN); I inform them,
PRIOR to any transactions, that any item _MUST_ be sent by 1st Class
US Mail (I understand that the general feeling in the US is anti-
post office and pro-courier - but the Mail system in our 2 countries
works just fine for moi, thank you very much).

It does take a day or so longer - but I save *BIG TIME* in costs
and do not have to pay those worthless do-nothing s.o.b's one red
cent. All businesses have been fully accommodating to my requests
to send items via the mail. It may be the default action to use
a courier service in the US; but that doesn't mean Canadians have to
get screwed by this. It's not the fault of the US companies that
Canada allows this immoral activity - but Canadians can avoid this
travesty, simply by insisting items are sent via the Mail.

I've never lost anything, nor had anything broken, for over a decade
and that's pretty good odds AFAIC (YMMV). The items arrive, with a
covering bill-of-lading with GST and basic import duty and it's low,
based upon contents value and those slimy parasites called customs
brokers don't get any money from me. Works-out quite well . . .
