iMac to GS again

I've been trying to connect 2 modems to transfer files
from my iMac to GS. I've tried many times with many different
configurations with no luck. The best result I've seen is with
the ata command on both. With that I had one modem return "connect"
for a few seconds. I've tried to increase the carrier wait time to 120
seconds with "atas7120", but could see no difference. Any ideas?
I'm using Appleworks 5 on Mac, and Modem Manager with a 33.6
Global Village modem on GS.
