ADT via direct modem connection

If it is possible to have direct modem connection between two computers 
(especially between iMac and Apple IIe), is it possible to run ADT 
between them? Current version of ADT's does not provide any way to issue 
ATX3D or ATA command. I can think of two ways of approach.

1. Modify MacADT and ADT to accomodate these two commands. Unfortunately, 
   I don't have enough potential for this.

2. Somehow, using telecom programs, make the two modems connect each 
   other. Quit telecom programs without hang-up on both computers so that 
   the connection between the two modems are still established. Then 
   start MacADT and ADT on both sides. If this can be done, I believe, 
   MacADT and ADT won't notice any difference between direct connection 
   between serial ports and connection via modems.

If my idea #2 can be done without too much hassle, it would solve lots of 
my problems in transferring files to Apple IIe. I have an iMac and up to 
now (maybe even in the near future), there has been no way to use ADT.
