No you wouldn't be using  DOS 3.3 with a CD-ROM. I just listed is as one of
the two most likely formats for II+ or IIe programs. I find that when I put a
hard
drive on a II+ or IIe then I start to prefer programs that I can boot off the
hard
drive

Not completely, my Mac can read my ProDOS CDs. At least in OS 9.2.
Haven't tried with OSX though.
