I have cleaned quite a few Apple 3.5 drive mechanisms, both 800K and 1.4M,
and normally they need opening up, dusting out with air pressure and a long
soft brissled paint brush. Being careful with the air, not too much
pressure. After that try manually inserting and ejecting an old unwanted
floppy in and out to see where it's sticking. Add a small amount of
lubricant to the metal parts that need it. Silicon spray or silicone grease
is good for that, but keep it off the heads or parts that contact the
diskette.
