I had a similar problem happen on a 5.25 drive years  ago. Back then, I 
think it happened because the internal 20-pin plug on the IDE-20 flat 
ribbon cable had been inserted upside down. I recall that the problem made 
the power supply click, and it froze the whole computer. When I reversed 
the cable, the computer worked again.

Trouble-shooting: try plugging the disk drive into a different IIe to see 
whether the problem appears. If it does, then the drive is the source of 
hassle.  If not, then the drive is innocent.

Sometimes one of the four IC chips has blown, and this causes Disk II 
problems. The ICs are cheap --- I'd sell a set of the four for $3.00 plus 
$1.00 postage.  I bought them in batches of 50 each a few years ago.
