So should I be searching db-9 joystick on ebay? Thanks,
You should be searching for an Apple II joystick on eBay. The DE-9 vs. DB-9 was an interesting sideline, but not relevant to what you really need to know. As a matter of fact, older 16-pin DIP connected joysticks will work fine as well. But Atari/Commodore joysticks also had DE-9 ends on them - and they will absolutely not work without some kind of adaptation, and still aren't really what you're looking for.
Watch for Apple II joystick auctions. That's what will work in your GS.
