I have two different brands in my home net, Apple & Farralon. Both the same
as the ones you describe.
The resistor in the RJ11 plug is the terminator as you correctly guessed.
You need one in each end of the chain, therfore there should be a total of
two in any single AppleTalk network.
As each LocalTalk kit comes with a terminator (when new) you normally end up
with a couple of spares by the time you put 3 or 4 Apples on the network.
