It is a UNIX kernal. It is a BSD kernal with a bit of the NeXT Mach
kernal thrown in for good measure. It was based on the FreeBSD
kernal variant of Unix aka Berkely Software Distribution or what is
now left of it.

Hey, its all that cheap hardware that has been surfacing lately in
the thrift stores that get people interested in the Apple II plus add
in a bit of nostalgia and for those of us who couldn't afford an
Apple II in the day due to the fact that we were young, finding
old Apple II hardware cheap was a lure to explore the Apple
II. That was why I got started on it about six months ago
anyway. It is like those guys who rebuild old cars that they
wanted when they were teens that daddy wouldn't get for
them and now they rebuild them as a hobby when they are
older. It is cool getting old hardware to work again and to
explore what was possible in the day. Now if I owned one
when I was in college, it would have been really cool. :-)
