They did, and you *are* out of date.

Gateway created Amiga International IIRC, which was wholly owned.
However, they screwed around with various half hearted plans, and
various chief execs, and finally sold everything except the technology
patents to a company called Aminos at the end of 1999.  Aminos was
owned by a consortium of people, the two most prominent ones being
Bill McEwen and Fleecy Moss, both enthusiastic Amigans and former
Gateway employees.  Aminos has since changed its name to Amiga Inc
(http://www.amiga.com) and they hold all licensing rights to Amiga
technology.

There's quite a lot going on in the Amiga scene at this time.
