I think that Terry associates "Apple ][ joystick" with a game port (16-pin
DIP header) plug, not a DE-9.  In fact, Apple II's later than the ][+ all
sport DE-9 joystick connectors.  In the //c and //c+ it's also a mouse
port.

Although adapters were made (and they are just a pin permutation) and
you could easily make one yourself, it's pretty easy to find a <$5
DE-9 joystick.  (The FAQ, no doubt, lists the pinouts for the DE-9 and
the classic 16-pin game port.)
