Sigh...  the software base for the existing Operating System is the
point.

The point is that the Operating System a decade from now will likely
be the same, or a derivation of the current Operating System, so the
software base a decade from now will likely be the same software base
as it is now, with incremental changes, not radical shifts in support
for "other" Operating Systems.
