Re: New to the Apple IIGS, unknown card in slot 7.

As Mitchell says, that card is a Universal Disk Controller, which is best
utilised in an Apple IIe or II+ but it will also work in the GS and Laser
128, 128EX & 128EX/2 compatables.
I have the Laser UDC card which is made by VTECH and is almost identical to
the one in your pictures. One difference I noticed is I don't have a crystal
and your's does, but otherwise it is virtually identical. Also mine has more
printing identifying the card.
I also have the manual which is only a few pages. If you like I can send you
the scans I have made of the manual. Just send me an e-mail if you want it.
The manual details all 13 possible drive configurations for the card. I
assume it is the same for your card, but I'm not 100% certain.
You can connect Apple 3.5 drives or 5.25 drives to each connector, and you
can daisy chain them too. I am not certain if you can use a Unidisk 3.5
because it's not specified in the manual, but I have heard others with a
different card to mine can.
Slot 5 would be my recomendation for the card, and some configurations only
work in slot 5.
As a general rule the top connector is for drive 1, the lower is for drive
2, but the slot and drive assignments change depending on how you connect up
the drives.
A couple of combo's to try at first from slot 5:
Top Bottom
3.5 - top is slot 5 drive 1, bottom not connected
5.25 - top is slot 5 drive 1
3.5 3.5 top is S5D1 bottom is S5D2
3.5 5.25 top S5D1 bottom S5D2
3.5/3.5 - 1st S5D1, 2nd S5D2 is daisychained to drive 1, bottom
not connected.
3.5/5.25 5.25 1st is S5D1, 2nd daisychained is S2D1, bottom is S5D2.
it appears from reading the manual the assignment of the 1st and 2nd may
change on this last option depending on which drive has a boot disk. I
havn't tried it so I don't know.
Most/all of these can be achieved from the GS smartport, this is why I
believe the card is better utilised in a IIe which can't normally use 3.5
drives without this card. If your smartport is not working, buy another GS
and sell this UDC card as it is probably worth more IMO.
