    I'm not certain about hardisk partitions (I can't mount more than
12 at a time with my RamFAST) though when I was mounting and
ejecting several different CD-ROM discs I had a fair idea. Once
the desktop ran out of space for offline (dimmed) CD icons, it 
began placing and overlapping them over existing icons.

    You can do the same test I suppose by inserting several different
5.25 or 3.5 floppy disks with different volume names. Hmm, I seem
to remember trying this long ago and at SOME point getting a Finder
message that I exceeded the maximum number of volume icons for
the desktop.
