Re: IIC drive questions
Having just disassembled a IIc external drive and verifying with a
regular internal one, I can state unequivically you need another IIc
drive to repair the first one. Ask around (CSA2.marketplace) for a IIc
drive, someone out there has a nonfunctional IIc they I'm sure would be
happy to part with the drive. If you are lucky, someon has a
nonfunctional IIc drive you could get the piece off of.
Is it hard to replace just the door piece? I do not think so if you
have the replacement piece(s). (You will probably need the spring too,
ask for it.) You will need a #1 and a #2 Phillips (crossed)
screwdriver. Use the one that fits a particular screw best, using one
that doesn't fit makes your life harder by damaging the screws.
Lay the IIc up-side down on a firm and nonabrasive surface, cardboard on
dining table does nicely. Remove the 4 screws at the corners and the
two by the handle that hold the top together. Turn upright and pop the
case apart. Remove the cable that plugs into the right side of the
drive, it just pulls out. Pull slowly and firmly, rock the plug
slightly side to side if it wont move.
Lay the IIc up-side down again and remove the 4 screws that hold the
drive in place. Lift the IIc off the drive and set aside.
4 screws to remove the metal housing to get at 4 screws to loosen the
face plate assembly. Remove all 8. Wiggle and remove remaining pieces
of drive door close mechanism.
Place the new door latch piece and spring. The spring goes on the tabs
between the metal piece and the door latch, fairly obvious, but the door
latch holds the spring against the metal tab.
Place four screws in the face plate, then test the door opeartion.
Reassemble the rest in the reverse order of disassembly.
Thankx,
Ed
