It was a term also used by Control Data Corp. it is a reference to the old
"washing machine" hard drives that had a removable set of disks. the way the
drives were designed there were 2 sets of disks. A removable set and a
permanent(sp?) set both maxing out at 30 meg capacity. Therefore they were
called Winchester's (because of the famous Winchester 30 30 rifle.)
Was a tech grad of CDI and got this story from a 70 year old tech
instructor.
