It was part of a much larger undisclosed settlement of patent
infringements. $150M is a very small amount to a company like Apple or
M$. What M$ wanted out of the deal was for IE to become the default
browser on Macs. In order to force Apple to capitulate M$ was prepared
to trash the finished Office 98 for Mac. Jobs knew that would hurt Mac
sales badly and negotiated the best deal he could. Did M$ bail out
Apple? Nope. Did they pay somewhat for some of the stuff they stole? A
little.
