Per H. W. Fowler in A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, from Oxford
University Press (copyright 1927, pg 331):

   "loan.  The verb has been expelled from idiomatic southern English
   by _lend_, but was formerly current, & survives in the U.S. and
   locally in the U.K."

Idiomatic,  hmm?
