Re: Macs and Apple//'s

The SE is probably not the best machine for this job, but it could still be
useful.

Its utility actually depends on the model. If the IIgs has a 3.5" drive, and
you own an Intel PC, and the SE is a FDHD, SE/30 (or equivilantly upgraded
unit), it can be used to get software on the IIgs via floppy.

If it has a hard drive, it can be used to store software then transfer the
software to your:
 - IIgs via floppy
 - IIgs via AppleTalk
 - IIgs or //c via ADT
 - IIgs or //c via Kermit, or other telecomm software

You can get software onto the SE from:
 - the Internet, using a TCP/IP stack
 - the Internet, using a shell account and telecomm software
 - an AppleTalk network, from other Macs or a LocalTalk bridge to a Unix
   or Windows machine
 - any other system (including BBSs) using telecomm software

Of course most of these situations can be handled by your IIgs. But they
would be more convenient with an SE if you can not find a hard drive for
your IIgs.

If you want something in an SE form factor, I suggest the Mac SE/30. It
looks (almost) exactly the same, but it much faster and much more useful.
(Particularly with its high density drive.)

Byron.
