Re: Top-Notch Apple IIGS Setup?
I still have a IIgs that I consider as a very nice machine:
Rom 01, ZIP GS 9/64, Second Sight, Ramfast, 240Mb SCSI HD, 6Mb GS Ram
Plus, Quickie (Colour!) Scanner, HP Deskwriter and ImageWriter II,
SupraFaxModem 33k6, 2x3.5" drive (one is use), AE Audio Animator, and
that's about it.
People talk about 2x 3.5" and 2x5.25". To my opionion this is overdone,
why would you use 5.25" disks these days on a IIgs other than using old
software? One of each drives would be enough for average use.
Especially the ZIP/Ramfast combo makes it a fast system. With extensions
off, GS/OS 6.01 starts up in about 6 to 10 seconds and with extensions
it still is a little under 30 seconds.
Still miss that good old METAL/FutureVision BBS that I used to run on
it. The Ramfast card made the BBS reboot in 6 seconds, while a high
speed SCSI card took 30... the difference between taking a new call or
missing it :)
