On the IIc, SmartPort devices (hard drives and 3.5" floppy disk drives) are
mapped to slot 5. If you have no 3.5" drive then the hard drive will be
drive 1. I don't know what order the drives will appear in if you have a
3.5" drive.

If you boot into ProDOS and go to the BASIC prompt and type CAT,S5,D1 it
should show a catalog of the hard drive (assuming it is the first drive
connected to slot 5). If the drive is not formatted properly it will
probably say I/O ERROR. If it can't find a drive at this slot and drive
location it should say DEVICE NOT CONNECTED.
