I have never heard of this Apple II driver that Steven mentions.
I bought a HP 500C new, and it didn't come with a GS driver, only a PC. The
Mac version of the printer is a Deskwriter, obviously that would have Mac
driver.
If Steven could elaborate on what OS the driver is for, I'd be interested to
learn more.

What you need is a program called Harmonie, that sells for $20 I think, and
will run a variety of HP Printers from System 6.
I have used my HP500C (colour) on the GS running AppleWorks 3.0 without a
driver, and just used the built in printer fonts and my own homemade cable
(mini din-8 to DB25). I set up all the printer codes in Custom Printer in
AppleWorks. But you do have to change a dip-switch in the printer to change
it to serial port instead of the default parallel. As far as config is
concerned, I used 9600,N,8,1 and DTR handshaking. Definately not XON/XOFF
although that should still work.
