The ROM 3 used _hardware_ shadowing to display text page-2
(whereas it was done via software on the ROM 00/01 board) but you
would still be required to manually select 'Alternate Display Mode' to
turn the shadowing function on. There's no speed penalty using it on
the ROM 3 though since it's done in hardware.

Interestingly, my old ROM 3 board (which has some glitches with
the CDA menu) seemed to automatically invoke Alternate Display
Mode when required, or at least have the CDA flagged to 'active'
at all times. I've yet to test my replacement board to see if the same
behavior occurs.

If you'd like to see an example where Alternate Display Mode is
required, run Goonies and let it load up the joystick calibration
screen. You should see an entire screen filled with "2"s.
