Apple defined two ways of dealing with such things on the IIgs many
years ago and they are even supported by GSHK. The two methods are
called AppleSingle and AppleDouble files.

AppleSingle files are basically a single file with the data fork data
at the beginning followed by the resource fork data.

AppleDouble files are basically two files, one containing the data
fork data and the other, which I believe had a modified version of the
original file's filename, containing the resource fork data.

I'm not sure but these files may have headers to keep track of file
types and such. AppleSingle files will almost certainly have a header
to at least tell you the size of the data fork so you know where the
resource fork begins.

Filetypes can be preserved using a system like Binary II if you really
wanted to bother with such a project.
