It is strange that this would happen to different computers at the same time. I would
suspect someone playing with the control panel. The next time one does this, check the
control panel right away. Even if it is set to the slot 5 port, this might not take effect
until the computer is turned off and restarted OR you can run the built-in test. Hit
control-option-open apple and then press and release the reset key. Right as the test
starts, hit control - reset. This will boot the computer. If you hit the control - reset
too late, it can change the battery ram. This will let the new settings take effect
without turning the computer off and on.
The order of the drives is important. You want the 3.5s and then the 5.25s. You also want
power off while swapping.
Also try the computers with just one 3.5 drive and a boot disk to see what happens.
