This adds a layer of complexity and potential future obfuscation. Yes, zip is ubiquitous now. But uncompressing those images in the future may present unforeseen problems. Like the .SHK and .BXY wrappers that made sense for Apple stuff in another age, now they're just a pain to have to unravel.
Or proprietary backup schemes - it sure is tricky to get a real file out of them. Or drive compression - remember that? You needed a device driver to get at those files. Time marches on, and wrappers make for headaches down the road.
